Our History
Before there was Mossy Oak Properties, there was Mossy Oak. Before that – just dirt.
It all started back in the spring of 1986 when Mossy Oak’s founder and CEO, Toxey
Haas, gathered up baggies of leaves, sticks and dirt and started contemplating a
new kind of camouflage – camouflage that actually matched the elements in an environment.
Inspired, ambitious and utterly obsessed with hunting, he presented his idea – and
his baggies – to a small audience at a textile factory. After enduring a few funny
looks, he asked the critical question: could they reproduce the contents of the
bag on a piece of fabric? The answer was clearly yes, as Mossy Oak’s initial pattern,
Bottomland,™ was soon released. And Mossy Oak camoflage was born.
Up to that point Toxey had spent the better part of his life scouting and hunting
the bottomlands and woods of Mississippi and Alabama. This rich and vast landscape
helped define him as a man and instilled in him a deep and unabiding passion and
respect for not only the animals, but for the land, and it’s management as a resource
to the outdoorsman. That passion led to the founding of Mossy Oak and has helped
fuel its growth ever since.
Today, Mossy Oak’s obsession with the outdoors has grown to mean many things to
millions of sportsman all across North America. From hundreds of outdoor gear manufacturers
featuring our camouflage, to a full scale television and video programming facility,
to scientifically based wild game products to the most logical manifestation of
Mossy Oak’s obsession with the outdoors — Mossy Oak Properties. Mossy Oak continues
to foster its passion for the outdoors in more ways than one. And, along the way,
Mossy Oak has become one of the most trusted outdoor brands in the world
