About New Mexico

The Land of Enchantment encompasses 77.8 million acres, just over 121,697 square miles. Located in the southwestern region of the United States, neighboring states include Colorado, Oklahoma, Texas, Arizona, and Utah.
New Mexico’s name derives from the Spanish name “Neuvo Mexico,” referencing the name given to the northern region of Mexico. New Mexico became the 47th state of the union in 1912.
It’s nicknamed the Land of Enchantment in honor of the state’s rich culture and beauty. The state flower is the Yucca Flower, and the state bird is the Greater Roadrunner.
The state is made up of 33 counties. Santa Fe is the capital and the third largest city. Albuquerque, in north central New Mexico, is the largest city.
