About Wisconsin

The Badger state encompasses 41.9 million acres, just over 65,498 square miles. Located in the midwestern region of the United States, part of its northern border is formed by Lake Superior, and its eastern border is formed by Lake Michigan. Neighboring states include Michigan, Illinois, Iowa, and Minnesota.
Wisconsin’s name derives from an Algonquian word, Meskonsing, meaning “it lies red” and referring to the red sandstone along the Wisconsin River. Wisconsin became the 30th state of the union in 1848.
Its nickname, the Badger State, dates back to the 1800s when lead miners dug holes for their lodgings, burrowing like badgers, to survive the harsh winters. Subsequently, the badger is the official state animal. The state flower is the Blue Violet, and the state bird is the American Robin.
The state is made up of 72 counties. Madison is the capital and the second largest city. Milwaukee is the largest city.
