Frequently Asked Questions

What deer regulations apply to Pennsylvania hunters?

According to the 2025 and 2026 Pennsylvania Game Commission hunting season dates the statewide archery season begins on the first Saturday in October. The state has strict rules to protect young bucks and hunters usually need a buck to have at least three points on one antler before they can shoot it. The massive regular firearms deer season kicks off on the Saturday after Thanksgiving and runs for two weeks.

The state also offers a special early season just for young hunters. You have to enter a county by county lottery to get a tag to shoot an antlerless deer. The state started protecting young bucks back in 2002 and the program has totally transformed the hunting by allowing bucks to grow older and much bigger across the entire state.

What makes Pennsylvania elk hunting unique in the eastern United States?

According to the Pennsylvania Game Commission the state manages a totally wild and free roaming herd of about 1400 elk up in the north central mountains making it one of the absolute best elk hunting destinations in the East. The state hands out a very small number of hunting tags every year through a random computer lottery and most hunters wait their entire lives hoping to win one. These Rocky Mountain elk were brought into the state in the early 1900s after the native eastern elk were completely wiped out.

The bull elk in Cameron and Elk counties grow massive antlers because they eat plants loaded with rich limestone minerals. Buying private land inside the elk zone is incredibly popular for hunters who want a guaranteed place to hunt when they finally win that lucky lottery tag.

What turkey and other wildlife hunting does Pennsylvania offer?

According to the 2026 Pennsylvania Game Commission hunting guides the state has massive wild turkey flocks everywhere but the deep north central woods offer the absolute best hunting. The spring turkey season runs through April and May while the fall turkey season lets hunters use both guns and bows. The state gives hunters a dedicated black bear season in November and pulls in a massive bear harvest every single year which draws hunters from all over the country.

Hunting ruffed grouse in the young brushy woods left behind by logging crews offers some of the absolute best bird hunting in the Northeast. Huge flocks of American woodcock migrate through the state every October giving hunters with pointing dogs an incredible hunting experience.
