Frequently Asked Questions

What deer season structure does Missouri have?

According to the 2026 hunting guides from the Missouri Department of Conservation, the archery season opens on September 15 and runs until mid-November and then opens again from late November until January 15. The main firearms season usually runs for a couple of weeks right in the middle of November, hitting perfectly during the peak rut when big bucks are moving. They also have a muzzleloader season and special antlerless seasons. Unlike some nearby states that force you to use a shotgun, Missouri lets you use high-powered centerfire rifles where they are legal. The early September bow season gives hunters a huge advantage to hunt deer for months.

What should I look for in Missouri hunting land to maximize buck production?

Thick hardwood creek bottoms are the absolute most important thing to look for because they give the deer a place to hide when the hunting pressure gets intense. Properties in the northeast and central parts of the state that have thick creek woods sitting right next to huge crop fields create totally predictable feeding patterns for the deer. Having good land roads inside the property is just as important because you need to reach your tree stand without spooking the deer out of their beds. Land with ridges, creek crossings and field edges naturally forces the deer to walk past your stand. Planting food plots in small clearings makes the land even more valuable.

How does the hunting lease market work in Missouri?

Leasing land to hunters is a massive business in Missouri especially in the northern farming counties and the northeast river bottoms. Based on 2026 local hunting lease data you can usually charge 10 to 25 dollars per acre every year to let someone hunt deer and turkeys on your land. If you own premium land in the northeast with a proven history of massive bucks and perfectly managed food plots you can easily get 20 to 35 dollars per acre. The lease market here is very competitive because the state grows huge deer but does not have the crazy tag limits of Iowa. Renting the land out is a great way to pay your property taxes while you are not using it.
