About Oklahoma

The Sooner state encompasses 45 million acres, just over 68,899 square miles. Located in the south central region of the United States, its southern border is formed by the Red River. Neighboring states are Colorado, Kansas, Missouri, Arkansas, Texas, and New Mexico.

Oklahoma’s name derives from two Choctaw Indian words, okla, meaning “people,” and humma, meaning “red.” Oklahoma became the 46th state of the Union in 1907.

It’s nicknamed the “Sooner State” which references the thousands of people who crossed the border before an appointed time set on April 22, 1889 to lay claim to an area known as the Unassigned Lands. The “Sooners” had a head start as they raced into the territory to claim their land. The state flower is the Oklahoma Rose, and the state bird is the Scissor-tailed Flycatcher.

The state is made up of 77 counties. Oklahoma City is the capital and the largest city. Tulsa, on the Arkansas River, is the second largest city.
