Frequently Asked Questions

What types of cattle ranches are available in Oklahoma?

Oklahoma has a massive cattle ranching history and the state constantly ranks in the top five nationally for beef cow numbers. Native grass ranches in the Flint Hills of northeastern Oklahoma and the Cross Timbers area of central Oklahoma produce incredible beef because of the deep roots on the native bluestem grass and great oak tree shade.

Ranches in the central and southern parts of the state usually run on coastal bermuda grass giving ranchers a much longer grazing season than the northern cool weather states.

The amount of land needed to feed one cow changes wildly from five acres on great bermuda grass in the southeast to 20 acres on the rocky native dirt in the central Cross Timbers area.

What does ranch land cost per acre in Oklahoma?

According to the 2025 USDA Land Values Summary the Southern Plains average pasture dirt sits around $2,260 per acre. Because of this native grass Flint Hills ranch dirt in Osage Pawnee and Creek counties usually runs $1,500 to $3,000 per acre.

Rougher Cross Timbers oak country in central Oklahoma runs $1,200 to $2,500 per acre for grazing dirt that also offers great deer hunting.

Thick improved bermuda grass fields in the southeast used for massive cattle herds run $2,000 to $4,000 per acre. Western Oklahoma native pastures run $1,000 to $2,000 per acre. Oklahoma ranch dirt remains incredibly cheap compared to similar ranch land in Kansas Colorado or Texas.

What should buyers know about operating a cattle ranch in Oklahoma?

Ranching in Oklahoma is fantastic because the warm weather gives you a much longer grazing season than the northern plains states and you face way less drought risk than the dry western states.

Buying young cattle letting them eat native grass all summer and selling them in the fall is a massive business on Oklahoma native grass ranches. Planting winter wheat extends the grazing season and gives the cattle high quality green food during the cold months.

Oklahoma has an incredible network of active cattle auction barns spreading across the state so you always get fair market prices when you sell. Tons of Oklahoma ranchers easily boost their yearly income by leasing their land out for deer and turkey hunting during the fall.
