Frequently Asked Questions

What hunting and outdoor recreation does Oregon land offer?

Oregon is a totally incredible hunting state. You can hunt Rocky Mountain elk in the eastern Blue Mountains and massive Roosevelt elk in the western coastal rainforest giving you two totally different hunting experiences.

Mule deer live all over the state and hunting blacktail deer in the western rainforest is incredibly unique. Getting a tag for Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep or California bighorn sheep requires beating terrible lottery odds. Black bear hunting is fantastic in almost all the forested zones.

Fishing for steelhead and salmon on the Rogue Deschutes Umpqua and John Day rivers is famous all over the country. The high desert dirt in the southeast around Harney and Lake counties is the absolute best spot for pronghorn and mule deer.

How does the Oregon elk tag system work for private landowners?

According to the 2026 Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife regulations the state hands out elk tags through general over the counter sales for broad areas and strict lottery draws for premium units. Hunters use a preference point system to win the lottery tags.

Private landowners who own enough dirt can apply for Landowner Preference tags which gives them priority access to tags for their own property without waiting years to win the public lottery. You can still buy general season elk tags over the counter for many areas.

The eastern Blue Mountains units are the hardest lottery tags to win for Rocky Mountain bulls. Properties sitting in these premium units carry massive price tags because they guarantee great elk hunting.

What fishing access does Oregon waterfront and river land provide?

Oregon rivers offer some of the absolute best steelhead and salmon fishing in the Pacific Northwest. The Rogue River in Jackson County is famous nationwide for both winter and summer steelhead and fall chinook salmon.

Fly fishermen consider the Deschutes River one of the best dry fly steelhead rivers in the entire country. The Umpqua River offers fantastic trout and steelhead fishing.

Private dirt that gives you direct bank access to these famous rivers is extremely rare and serious fishermen will pay a massive premium to own it. The Wallowa River and the Grande Ronde offer even more amazing trout and steelhead fishing on private land up in the northeast corner of the state.
