About Florida

The Sunshine state encompasses 42 million acres, just over 65,758 square miles. Located in the southeastern-most region of the United States, neighboring states include Alabama and Georgia. The Gulf of Mexico forms most of its western border, the Atlantic ocean forms the eastern border, and the Straits of Florida form the southern border of the Florida peninsula.

Florida’s name derives from a Spanish word, La Florida, meaning “full of flowers” and referencing the beautiful flowers in bloom when Ponce de León discovered the land in 1513. Florida became the 27th state of the union in 1845.

Known for its beautiful beaches, Florida is nicknamed the “Sunshine State” because of the abundance of sunny weather. Additional popular places to visit are Walt Disney World, other major theme parks, and NASA (space coast). The state flower is the Orange Blossom and the state bird is the Northern Mockingbird.

The state is made up of 67 counties. Tallahassee is the capital but only the 9th largest city. Jacksonville, on the Atlantic coast, is the largest city. St. Augustine, also on the east coast, is considered America’s oldest city.
