Frequently Asked Questions

How has Mississippi’s whitetail deer management improved the hunting?

According to the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks, the deer herds have gotten much better since the 2000s because the state forced hunters to stop shooting young small bucks. Landowners also started running their own strict deer management programs. Properties that force hunters to only shoot bucks with at least four points on one side have seen incredible results, with bucks regularly living 4 or 5 years before someone shoots them. The hill counties like Attala, Choctaw, Webster and Calhoun are now growing massive mature bucks that rival the deer coming out of Alabama and Tennessee. Neighbors often team up to form massive management areas, which helps everyone grow bigger deer.

What is the deer season structure in Mississippi?

According to the 2025 and 2026 hunting guides from the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks, the state gives you one of the longest deer seasons in the South. The archery season opens on October 1 and runs all the way to January 31. The state also added a special early velvet archery season in mid-September. The main gun season opens in late November and also runs until January 31. The southeast part of the state gets to hunt even later into February. The state lets you shoot multiple deer every year and since you can hunt wild hogs all year long, owning land here gives you something to hunt almost every month of the year.

What turkey hunting does the Mississippi land offer?

According to the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks, the state has an incredible wild turkey population, especially in the wooded hill counties and the thick river bottoms. The spring turkey season usually runs from late March through early May. Hunters regularly shoot massive record-book turkeys out of the hill counties. When you add up the long deer season, the spring turkey season, and the endless wild hog hunting, owning a property in Mississippi gives you something to hunt for nine or ten months out of the year, which is an unbelievable deal.
