Frequently Asked Questions

How long is South Carolina deer season and why does it matter to hunters?

According to the 2026 South Carolina hunting regulations the state gives hunters one of the absolute longest combined deer seasons in the country. In Game Zones 3 and 4 which cover the southern and coastal plain counties the archery and gun seasons kick off on August 15 and run straight through January 1. Starting in mid August lets bow hunters chase bucks while they are still in their summer feeding patterns before the heavy hunting pressure begins.

Running the season all the way into January lets hunters catch the late rut when the oldest and smartest bucks finally make mistakes. The seasons in Game Zones 1 and 2 up north are a bit shorter but still incredibly generous compared to nearby states. The state also hands out plenty of doe tags to help hunters manage their local deer herds properly.

What does hunting land cost per acre in South Carolina?

Based on the 2025 USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service land values general hunting and timber dirt in the Pee Dee and Midlands runs $2,000 to $4,500 per acre as long as it has decent dirt roads and basic hunting stands. Great river bottom properties along major rivers with a proven history of growing huge bucks run $3,000 to $6,000 per acre.

ACE Basin flooded duck properties command the absolute highest prices. Renting out your land to hunters is a huge business here and hunters gladly pay $10 to $20 per acre every year to lease good deer and turkey dirt. Overall you can buy incredible hunting land in South Carolina for much less money than you would spend in North Carolina or Georgia.

What turkey and other wildlife hunting is available on South Carolina land?

South Carolina has a massive wild turkey flock especially down in the coastal plain counties where the mix of pine trees and hardwood river bottoms gives the birds everything they need to thrive. According to the 2026 National Wild Turkey Federation guide the spring turkey season runs from April 3 through May 3 on private lands. The state recently dropped the bag limit to 2 gobblers for both residents and nonresidents but the hunting remains fantastic.

You can also hunt wild hogs completely legally year round on private land with zero bag limits. September dove hunting on harvested farm fields is incredibly popular statewide. Duck hunting along the coast and in flooded fields stays highly active from late November into January. The massive variety of animals and super long seasons give buyers an incredible hunting experience all year round.
