Frequently Asked Questions

What makes Wyoming mule deer hunting on private land distinctive?

Wyoming grows completely massive mule deer especially out in the Red Desert of Sweetwater County the foothills of the Wind River Range and the Bighorn Basin. The Red Desert area is famous for growing bucks with incredibly thick antlers because the deer eat mineral packed desert brush. Ranches that have natural water springs or deep dirt tanks pull all the mule deer off the dry public lands during the hot summer months giving the private landowner a massive hunting advantage.

When the heavy snow hits the mountains the deer migrate down to the lower sagebrush flats. Private dirt that sits right in the middle of these migration paths gives the owner the absolute perfect spot to hunt huge bucks as they travel through.

What does Wyoming hunting land cost per acre?

According to the 2025 USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service report hunting dirt prices change wildly depending on the area. Working ranch dirt out on the eastern plains runs $800 to $2,000 per acre. Mountain properties in Park Sheridan and Johnson counties that border premium elk hunting units and grow great hay run $2,500 to $6,000 per acre.

Private dirt in the Bighorn Basin with a proven history of holding giant mule deer runs $2,000 to $4,500 per acre. Renting out your land to hunters is a great way to make money and hunters usually pay $5 to $15 per acre every year to hunt deer and antelope while great elk hunting dirt brings in $10 to $25 per acre. Overall Wyoming hunting dirt stays much cheaper than similar land in Montana or Colorado.

What makes Wyoming the most accessible Western state for non resident antelope hunting?

Wyoming actually holds over half of all the pronghorn antelope in the entire world making it the absolute best place to see massive herds running across the prairie. However out of state hunters cannot just walk into a store and buy a tag over the counter. According to the 2026 Wyoming Game and Fish Department regulations every single out of state antelope hunter must apply through the strict lottery draw system by June 1.

Even though you have to enter the draw the massive number of antelope means the state hands out a huge number of tags making it much easier to win a tag here than in any other state. Ranches in Sweetwater Carbon Fremont Natrona and Goshen counties hold massive antelope herds all year long because the animals love the wide open native grass.
