Frequently Asked Questions

What hunting opportunities does Wyoming private land provide?

Wyoming is one of the absolute best hunting states in the Rocky Mountain West. You can hunt elk mule deer whitetail deer pronghorn antelope bighorn sheep mountain goats moose black bears mountain lions and even wild bison depending on exactly where your land sits. Having huge elk and mule deer herds on your property is the number one thing that drives up the price of hunting dirt.

Wyoming holds massive herds of pronghorn antelope out on the open sagebrush flats of the southern and central counties. If you want to hunt bighorn sheep or mountain goats you will have to wait years or even decades to win a tag in the incredibly tough state lottery.

How does Wyoming landowner elk tag program work?

According to the 2026 Wyoming Game and Fish Department rules the state has a very strict landowner license program that helps farmers and ranchers bypass the massive public lottery wait. If you own at least 160 connected acres and can prove that the animals actually use your land for 2000 days out of the year you can apply for up to two landowner tags per species.

For regular out of state hunters who do not qualify for the landowner tags getting a license is tough. Non resident elk tags are never sold over the counter. Every single out of state elk hunter must enter the strict lottery draw system and apply by early February just to get a chance to hunt.

What trout fishing does Wyoming private land provide?

Wyoming offers totally unbelievable wild trout fishing. The North Platte River sections in Natrona and Carbon counties constantly rank as some of the absolute best big river trout fishing spots in the entire country. The Green River flowing into Flaming Gorge through Sweetwater County produces massive rainbow trout.

The Shoshone River near Cody and the Greybull River in the Big Horn Basin pump out incredible wild brown and rainbow trout. Owning private dirt right on the riverbank lets you skip the crowded public fishing spots and catch way more fish in total peace. Private ranches in the Big Horn Basin also hide small spring creeks holding giant trout that nobody else is allowed to touch.
