About Kansas

The Sunflower state encompasses 52.6 million acres, just over 52,278 square miles. Located in the midwestern region of the United States, its northeastern border is formed by the Missouri River. Neighboring states include Nebraska, Missouri, Oklahoma, and Colorado.

Kansas’ name derives from a Sioux tribe who lived along the river, meaning “south wind people.” Kansas became the 34th state of the union in 1861.It’s nicknamed the Sunflower State in honor of the abundance of sunflowers in the early years of the state. The state flower is the Wild Sunflower, and the state bird is the Western Meadowlark.

Kansas is made up of 105 counties. Whichita is the largest city. Topeka, the capital, is the 5th largest city.

The average size farm comprises 781 acres. Agriculture makes a significant contribution to all 105 counties.
While cattle is Kansas’ top commodity, its most valuable crops are wheat and corn. The state also grows substantial quantities of soybeans, grain sorghum, and hay. Most of the cropland is found in the Smoky Hills area of the state.
