About Virginia

The Old Dominion state encompasses 27.3 million acres, just over 42,755 square miles. Located in the southeastern region of the United States, part of its eastern border is formed by the Atlantic Ocean. Neighboring states include West Virginia, Maryland, North Carolina, Tennessee, and Kentucky.
Virginia is named in honor of Queen Elizabeth I, “the Virgin Queen.” Virginia became the 10th state of the union in 1788.
It’s nicknamed the “Old Dominion” because it was England’s first, and therefore oldest, overseas colony or dominion. The state flower is the Flowering Dogwood, and the state bird is the Cardinal.
The state is made up of 95 counties. Richmond is the capital and the fourth largest city. Virginia Beach, on the coast, is the largest city.
