Mississippi Land

The Magnolia state encompasses 31.9 million acres, just over 48,000 square miles. Located in the southern region of the United States, part of its borders are formed by the Gulf of Mexico. The western border is the Mississippi River. Neighboring states include Louisiana, Arkansas, Tennessee, and Alabama.

Mississippi’s name derives from a Native American word meaning “great waters” or “father of waters,” referencing the great Mississippi River. Mississippi became the 20th state of the union in 1817.

It’s nicknamed the Magnolia State in honor of the magnolia trees that grow across the state. The state flower is the Magnolia which is the bloom of the Magnolia trees, and the state bird is the Mockingbird.

The state is made up of 82 counties. Jackson is the capital and the largest city. Gulfport, on the coast, is the second largest.
