The Mississippi River forms part of its borders to the east. Neighboring states include Missouri, Oklahoma, Texas, Tennessee, Louisiana, and Mississippi.

Arkansas’s name derives from an Indian tribe, the Quapaws, meaning the people downriver. Arkansas became the 25th state of the union in 1836.

It’s nicknamed the Natural State in honor of the natural beauty, clear lakes and streams, and abundance of natural wildlife. The state flower is the apple blossom, and the state bird is the northern mockingbird.

The state includes 75 counties.

Little Rock is the capital and the largest city. Fayetteville, in the northwest part of the state, is the second largest.
