About Kentucky

The Bluegrass state encompasses 25.8 million acres, just over 40,409 square miles. Located in the east south-central region of the United States, neighboring states include Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, West Virginia, Virginia, Tennessee, and Missouri.
Kentucky’s name derives from an Iroquois word, “ken-tah-ten,” meaning “land of tomorrow.” Kentucky became the 15th state of the union in 1792.
It’s nicknamed the Bluegrass State because of the abundance of Kentucky bluegrass, a species of grass found in many pastures. The state flower is the Giant Goldenrod, and the state bird is the Northern Cardinal.
The state is made up of 120 counties. Frankfort is the capital but only the 13th largest city. Louisville, on the Kentucky/Indiana border, is the largest city.

Agriculture

Agriculture generates about $5.3 billion in revenue for the Bluegrass state. There are approximately 76,500 farms in the state, covering 13 million acres. The average size farm comprises 171 acres. Agriculture makes a significant contribution to all 120 counties.
Kentucky’s top commodities are soybeans, equine and cattle products, and corn. The state also grows substantial quantities of hay, tobacco, and broilers. Most of the cropland is found in the Bluegrass region of the state.

Wildlife

With its mountains and lush forests, Kentucky wildlife is abundant on both land and water. Elk, black bear, white-tailed deer, squirrels, and raccoons are among the primary wildlife found. Kentucky is committed to conserving its wildlife habitats and natural resources.
