About Tennessee

The Volunteer state encompasses 26.9 million acres, just over 42,181 square miles. Located in the southeastern region of the United States, its western border is formed by the Mississippi River, and its eastern border is formed by the Great Smoky Mountains. Neighboring states include Kentucky, Virginia, North Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Arkansas, and Missouri.

Tennessee’s name may derive from a Cherokee village called Tanasi, which means “bend of the river,” referencing its location on the Tennessee River. Tennessee became the 16th state of the Union in 1796.

Nicknamed the “Volunteer State,” the spirited Tennessee militia played key roles during the War of 1812 and the Mexican American War of 1848, volunteering to fight where they were needed. The state flower is the Iris, and the state bird is the Mockingbird.

The state is made up of 95 counties. Nashville is the capital and the largest city. Memphis, on the Mississippi river, is the second largest.
