About Georgia

The Peach state encompasses 37.29 million acres, just over 58,265 square miles. Located in the southeastern region of the United States, part of its eastern border is formed by the Atlantic Ocean. Neighboring states include Tennessee and North Carolina to the north, South Carolina to the east, Florida to the south, and Alabama to the west. Part of the Appalachian Plateau is located in the state’s northwest corner.

Georgia was named for King George II of England who granted the charter for the colony in 1732. Savanna was the colony’s first permanent settlement in 1733. Georgia became the 4th state of the Union in 1788.

It is nicknamed the Peach State in honor of the fruit which were grown by the Cherokee Indians and became popular during the Civil War when soldiers from other states picked the delicious peaches from the trees near the battlefields. The state flower is the Cherokee Rose, which symbolizes the hardship the native Cherokee clans endured as they were forced to go to Oklahoma on the “Trail of Tears” in 1838. The leaves and white petals are said to represent the Cherokee clans, and the flower’s gold center symbolizes the gold for which their land was taken. The state bird is the Brown Thrasher.

Georgia is made up of 159 counties. Atlanta is the capital and largest city by population. Columbus is the second largest city.
